SABMiller published its 2012 Sustainable Development Report

The report covers the financial year ended 31 march 2012 and it has been produced in accordance with GRI G3 guidelines.  In 2012 the group’s revenue was US$31,388 million with earnings before interest, tax, amortisation and exceptional items and lager volumes of 229 million hectolitres.

One of the four strategic priorities for SABMiller is to constantly raise the profitability of local businesses, sustainably. SABMiller’s businesses understand that their profitability depends on healthy communities, growing economies and the responsible use of natural resources.

Reported Activities

During the past year, SABMiller has been implicated in a series of activities that have:

  • Generated over US$23,921million of economic value, the majority of which was distributed through the course of business to employees, shareholders and other stakeholders;
  • Reduced the water consumption and fossil fuel emissions per hectolitre of lager produced by 5% and 10% respectively;
  • Increased the average group score against its bespoke performance monitoring tool – the Sustainability Assessment Matrix (SAM) – from 2.9 to 3.2, and improved the score achieved in all ten priority areas;
  • Directly supported around 100,000 farming jobs in Africa;
  • Doubled the reach of the public-private Water Futures partnership, extending to four new markets: Colombia, Honduras, India and the USA;
  • Invested US$34 million in corporate social investment around the world, a significant portion of which is focused on supporting local entrepreneurs, particularly in Colombia and South Africa; and
  • Ensured that more than 50,000 employees are trained in alcohol responsibility and SABMiller policies.

The report published by SABMiller is referring to the global network, though Angola, Russia and Ukraine are no longer included following changes to strategic alliances this year.

Results of activities in Romania

One of the most important issues SABMiller considered in the report it is alcohol abuse. SABMiller launched the Talking.Alcohol.com website, available in eight languages. The website was a real success in Romania, where SABMiller developed a programme meant to reduce drunk-driving; over 10.000 website visitors  sent a “thank you” card to designed drivers. The website won The Gold Trophy for corporate communication at the Romanian Public Relations Award.
